Effectiveness of Keyword Research

You have just created a great looking website and entered very useful content, but if you are not targeting the correct keywords, then you might as well kiss your chances of being picked up by the search engines and being found by potential clients goodbye.

This can all be prevented by pinpointing the “correct”  or most effective keywords to describe your company and your services.

One of the biggest misconceptions about conducting keyword research for a search engine optimization campaign, is the belief that you already know which words a customer would use to find your site.  But guess what you probably don’t! Even though you may have created your site and know best what your company does and what services they provide does not mean that a potential paying customer does.

A suggetion would be to create a keyword list.  Make a list of all the words or combination of words that will potentially be the best choice to drive customes to your website.  You may also like to use the following keyword research tools to help you with targeting the correct keywords:

  • Word Tracker – (http://www.wordtracker.com).  There is a fee for this tool approximately $30-50/month depending on your package.  However, tt has a very effective tool for tracking down those keywords that will bring you success online.
  • Google AdWord Keyword Tool – (http://www.google.com/adwords).  In order to utilize this tool you will need a Google Adword account to access the keyword research tool.  A FREE and invaluable tool.
  • SEODigger – (http://www.seodigger.com).  This is a free tool, with a premium upgrade.  The free version is an excellent tool for identifying the keywords your competitors are focusing in on.

Besides your on-page content, keywords should also be used in several other elements on your site:

  • Meta Description Tags
  • Headings
  • Alt text
  • Anchor Text/ Navigational Links
